QUICKDRAW!
The Jackson Hole Quick Draw is an electrifying dance of colors. Artists, armed with brushes and boundless enthusiasm, dive headfirst as they go head-to-head with the clock, racing to finish masterpieces in 90 minutes. It’s an adrenaline rush! The stakes are high! And it was a thrill to participate in this year’s event for the third year in a row.
Quick Draw events are a lot of fun (and nerve wracking!) They often have spectators that can watch the creative process unfold in real-time. The Jackson Hole Quick Draw features a diverse group of artists with varying styles and techniques-ensuring there's something for everyone. The time constraint creates an exciting sense of urgency—but how does one prepare for all of this?
The rollercoaster of emotions leading up to this event help me prepare at the highest level. I work best leaving nothing to chance. I allow an entire year for an idea to develop.
Once the idea is “found” (small studies to a finished studio piece) I then move directly to preparation mode.
I pre-mix all my paint. Pack every brush (although only a handful are really used).
And try to set my onsite 10x10 working space similar to what I have in the studio (solvent to my left, roll of paper towels to my right).
The pulse-pounding spectacle where every brushstroke is a beat in the rhythm of artistic creation is a thrill! The energy is electric, the excitement infectious, and the results? A painting I can be proud of for the auction.
