JANUARY GREETINGS!
In nature, winter signals the end of a long productive year. As an artist, I can relate.
January can also bring a clean slate and with it, as in past years, a moment of internal dialog, “Well, what do I paint now?” Knowing this dialog would surface in 2025, I spent December combing through 7 years of reference photos. I reviewed, selected, printed and pasted images into my “IDEAS” Notebook.
This exercise helped me realize I was not lacking in reference material! By chunking my time, gathering everything into one place, my mind began to expand and new ideas for paintings unfolded. What a positive experience! Which leads me to ask, “How can your profession benefit from chunking your time, a task, or gathering ideas that will aid you in the future?”
January is also filling up with LIVE ZOOM calls! Just last night I was fortunate to join the Midway Art Association via Zoom and share my Gouache painting techniques.

We talked about Gouache’s unique ability for dynamic layers, edge variety, and value control. Gouache is a tricky and mischievous medium, but when tamed correctly it is a brilliant source for idea generation!
And last but not least, I’m thrilled to share a centerfold of “Cottonwood Symphony” in the January issue of Plein Air Magazine!
What an honor to receive professional publication! I feel richly blessed to have my work showcased in such a respected, collected, and energetic magazine!
A big thank you to publisher Eric Rhoads and staff member David Bernard.
