Jackson Hole Chamber of Commerce QuickDraw
Hello friends!
Our family is packing up and heading to Jackson Hole for one of my favorite events of the year—the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival! This will be my 6th year participating in the JH Chamber of Commerce QuickDraw, happening Saturday, September 19th, from 8:00–10:30 a.m. I’ll have 90 minutes to take a blank canvas to a finished painting right in Jackson’s Town Square!
I’ll also be at the Wilcox Gallery all day September 18th & 19th, come on over and say hello! We would love to see you! I’ll demo in the gallery, so feel free to come with any questions you may have!
Preparing for the Quickdraw doesn’t happen overnight.
A lot of time and energy goes into starting—and finishing—a painting in just 90 minutes! For me, It starts with choosing an idea that resonates. That inspiration typically comes from a plein air painting experience and this year is no different!
I’ll paint a beautiful scene from Mormon Row, where golden aspens and cottonwoods bathe in sunlight above a brooklet stream.
My QuickDraw preparation happens in a few stages:
Observe: I begin on location, gathering information through plein air painting, observation, and photographs.
Compose: In the studio, I digitally arrange and refine the scene until the design feels right.
Explore: I create a small gouache study—this is the play, the fun, and the discovery! Here I experiment with color, value, and design.
Prepare: I premix and tube my major oil colors and values so they’re ready to go on QuickDraw morning.
With only 90 minutes on the clock, there’s no time to second-guess color mixtures or major design decisions. I want my time in Jackson’s Town Square focused on one thing: bringing all that preparation together to create the strongest finished painting I can!
